Prevention of cardiovascular disease is no exception: Secondary prevention is where the greatest benefits lie. With regard specifically to <em>primary prevention of CVD in women<\/em>, my review of the evidence has led me to conclude that statin use is not warranted as a broad-based strategy. Here are the most important reasons why:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> No demonstrated benefit in preventing myocardial infarction<br \/>\n<strong>2.<\/strong> No demonstrated survival benefit<br \/>\n<strong>3.<\/strong> More known side effects in women than in men<br \/>\n<strong>4.<\/strong> The likelihood of as-yet unknown side effects\u00a0of long-term treatment<\/p>\n<p>Does that mean I would never find a woman in my practice whose clinical profile merits primary prevention of CVD with a statin drug? Of course not.\u00a0But to prescribe a drug to an asymptomatic, healthy person, I want clear evidence that this drug will help her live longer. Without sufficient evidence in hand to show that the benefits outweigh the potential harms, I decline.
