{"id":1523,"date":"2010-05-07T13:30:34","date_gmt":"2010-05-07T17:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/%e2%80%a2-bad-news-from-europe-even-worse-news-for-china\/"},"modified":"2011-07-19T17:44:58","modified_gmt":"2011-07-19T21:44:58","slug":"bad-news-from-europe-even-worse-news-for-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/2010\/05\/07\/bad-news-from-europe-even-worse-news-for-china\/","title":{"rendered":"Bad News from Europe; Even Worse News for China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bad News from Europe; Even Worse News for China:<\/strong> Too many Europeans with coronary disease are not receiving evidence-based treatment, according to a report from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.escardio.org\/guidelines-surveys\/ehs\/prevention\/pages\/euroaspire3-survey.aspx\">the third EUROASPIRE survey<\/a>. &#8220;The majority of coronary patients are not achieving blood pressure, lipid, and diabetes targets as defined in the Prevention Guidelines,&#8221; said investigator Dr Kornelia Kotseva, in a press release issued by the ESC in conjunction with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.escardio.org\/CONGRESSES\/EUROPREVENT-2010\/Pages\/welcome.aspx\">EuroPRevent 2010<\/a>, where the survey was presented. The survey included almost 9000 patients with coronary disease in 22 European countries and found:<\/p>\n<p>    56% had BP levels above target<br \/>\n    51% had serum cholesterol levels above target<br \/>\n    35% had diabetes<\/p>\n<p>The prospects in China may be even worse, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/circoutcomes.ahajournals.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/CIRCOUTCOMES.109.910711v1\">a new study published in <em>Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes<\/em><\/a>. Andrew Moran and colleagues used a computer model to forecast future rates of cardiovascular disease in China, and found that by 2030 the annual rates for heart disease and stroke could increase by 73%, leading to 7.7 million more CVD deaths between 2010 and 2030.
