{"id":2227,"date":"2010-07-29T13:16:36","date_gmt":"2010-07-29T17:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/?p=2227"},"modified":"2011-07-19T17:44:54","modified_gmt":"2011-07-19T21:44:54","slug":"cpr-studies-more-emphasis-on-chest-compressions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/2010\/07\/29\/cpr-studies-more-emphasis-on-chest-compressions\/","title":{"rendered":"CPR Studies: More Emphasis on Chest Compressions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two new studies of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) published in the <i>New England Journal of Medicine<\/i> provide strong support for recent initiatives that emphasize continuous chest compressions over the current standard of&nbsp;chest compression interrupted by rescue breathing. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa0908993\" mce_href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa0908993\">Rea and colleagues<\/a> studied 1941 patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest who were randomized to receive one of the two CPR methods. There was no significant difference in overall survival between the two groups; in addition, subgroup analyses revealed a trend toward better outcomes among those receiving continuous compressions.&nbsp;In the second paper, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa0908991\" mce_href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa0908991\">Svensson and colleagues<\/a> performed a similar study on 1276 patients and found no significant differences between the two groups.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMe1006306\" mce_href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMe1006306\">an accompanying editorial<\/a>, Myron Weisfeldt writes that &#8220;the straightforward conclusion from the primary analyses of these studies is that continuous chest compression without active ventilation, which is simpler to teach and perform, results in a survival rate similar to that with chest compression with rescue breathing.
