I serve on PCORI’s board of governors.

The purpose of the funded projects will be to generate knowledge that enables patients and their caregivers to make better-informed healthcare decisions. Grants will focus on comparative-effectiveness studies in 4 categories:

assessment of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment options for patients

health system interventions

communication and dissemination strategies

interventions to reduce or eliminate disparities

The success of this effort will depend on the strength of each and every funded project. So we are looking to patients, researchers, clinicians, and administrators around the country to collaborate and develop outstanding proposals.

An essential ingredient is that patients and their caregivers be genuinely involved in the design, implementation, dissemination, and adoption of the research. We at PCORI believe that although patients may not be experts in research, they are experts in their own experience. That principle is fundamental to what we aim to achieve.

For more perspective on our goals and our mission, please watch a video of a brief talk about PCORI that I gave in February. Click here.

To review the funding opportunities, click here.

Then, here on CardioExchange, share your thoughts about PCORI’s approach and about the research that needs to be done.

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute is distributing $120 million in research grants for comparative effectiveness studies.
