(Last year,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa0907845\">the main TREAT results<\/a> showed that treatment with\u00a0darbepoetin alfa was not beneficial \u2013 and was associated with an increase in the risk for stroke \u2013 in people with diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and moderate anemia.)<\/p>\n<p>The new report, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1005109\">appearing in the <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1005109\"><em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1005109\">,<\/a> analyzes the responsiveness to treatment and achieved hemoglobin levels and finds that\u00a0patients with a poor response to initial doses of darbepoetin alfa had higher rates of cardiovascular events and death when compared with good responders.\u00a0The TREAT investigators write that &#8220;it is likely that a poor initial response to ESA treatment in this population represents a marker for severity of illness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In their conclusion, the TREAT investigators acknowledge that &#8220;we cannot determine whether a poor initial response to an ESA places patients at increased risk for these adverse outcomes or whether the risk was augmented by the higher doses of darbepoetin alfa they received.
