{"id":36636,"date":"2013-05-13T16:16:14","date_gmt":"2013-05-13T20:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/?post_type=news&#038;p=36636"},"modified":"2013-05-13T16:16:14","modified_gmt":"2013-05-13T20:16:14","slug":"novel-leadless-pacemaker-makes-debut-at-hrs-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/2013\/05\/13\/novel-leadless-pacemaker-makes-debut-at-hrs-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Novel Leadless Pacemaker Makes Debut at HRS 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First results in human patients of a novel leadless pacemaker were presented last week at the HRS meeting in Denver by Vivek Reddy. \u00a0Pacemaker leads are the most common source of complications associated with pacemakers today.\u00a0The self-contained device is delivered\u00a0via catheter\u00a0to the right ventricle, to which it is attached with a fixation mechanism. \u00a0The device is manufactured by Nanostim, Inc., a small company which is being acquired by St. Jude Medical.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/05\/Leadless.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-36655\" alt=\"Leadless\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2013\/05\/Leadless.jpg\" width=\"205\" height=\"140\" \/><\/a>Reddy reported on a feasibility study of 33 patients with indications for a VVI(R) pacemaker but who were not pacemaker dependent. The pacemaker was successfully implanted in 32 patients. One patient had a cardiac perforation and tamponade during the procedure. Five days after an uncomplicated surgical repair he had a large right-sided stroke and died.<\/p>\n<p>During the course of the trial the procedure time shortened. Overall, the mean procedure time was 28 minutes. At evaluations at 2 days, 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 3 months, pacing threshold, R-wave amplitude, and impedance were all similar to conventional pacemakers.<\/p>\n<p>The device is expected to be available in Europe later this year.
