{"id":42648,"date":"2014-04-07T14:43:09","date_gmt":"2014-04-07T18:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/?post_type=news&#038;p=42648"},"modified":"2014-04-07T19:43:34","modified_gmt":"2014-04-07T23:43:34","slug":"dabigatran-approved-for-treatment-of-dvt-and-pe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/2014\/04\/07\/dabigatran-approved-for-treatment-of-dvt-and-pe\/","title":{"rendered":"Dabigatran Approved for Treatment of DVT and PE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boehringer Ingelheim\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/fda-approves-pradaxa-dabigatran-etexilate-mesylate-for-treatment-and-reduction-in-the-risk-of-recurrence-of-deep-venous-thrombosis-and-pulmonary-embolism-254175631.html\">announced<\/a> on Monday that the FDA has approved dabigatran (Pradaxa) for the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes both deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE),\u00a0and to reduce the risk of recurrent DVT and PE in patients who have been previously treated.<\/p>\n<p>All three of the new oral anticoagulants &#8212; dabigatran, rivaroxaban (Xarelto), and apixaban (Eliquis) &#8212;\u00a0have now received FDA approval for the major indication of stroke prevention\u00a0in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (SPAF). Rivaroxaban and dabigatran are also approved for the treatment of people who have or have had VTE, while rivaroxaban and apixaban are approved for\u00a0DVT prophylaxis following hip or knee replacement surgery.<\/p>\n<p>One significant difference between the drugs is that both\u00a0apixaban and rivaroxaban were studied using a single-drug approach for acute use in the hospital and for continued use afterwards. By contrast, dabigatran was studied in patients after they had received parenteral anticoagulants and is indicated for use following treatment with a parenteral anticoagulant for 5 to 10 days.
