Although a cause-and-effect relationship is far from being proved, the groups say that healthcare providers should tell their patients about the association before starting the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost dissections involve some trauma, stretch or mechanical stress,\u201d said Jos\u00e9 Biller, lead author of the scientific statement, in an <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.heart.org\/news\/neck-manipulation-may-be-associated-with-stroke?preview=5ab8\">AHA press release<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cSudden movements that can hyperextend or rotate the neck\u00a0\u2014 such as whiplash, certain sports movements, or even violent coughing or vomiting\u00a0\u2014 can result in CD, even if they are deemed inconsequential by the patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Current knowledge about cervical dissection is limited to case-control studies and clinical reports, making it impossible to establish a cause-and-effect relationship.
