{"id":6384,"date":"2011-02-09T19:03:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-10T00:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/?p=6384"},"modified":"2011-07-19T17:44:36","modified_gmt":"2011-07-19T21:44:36","slug":"trial-finds-benefit-in-wireless-pulmonary-artery-monitoring-in-hf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/2011\/02\/09\/trial-finds-benefit-in-wireless-pulmonary-artery-monitoring-in-hf\/","title":{"rendered":"Trial Finds Benefit in Wireless Pulmonary Artery Monitoring in HF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Results of a new trial suggest that an implanted device that provides continuous wireless sensing of pulmonary artery pressures can reduce hospitalizations in patients with heart failure (HF).\u00a0In a report\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736%2811%2960101-3\/abstract\">published online in the <em>Lancet<\/em><\/a>, William Abraham and members of the CHAMPION (CardioMEMS\u00a0Heart Sensor\u00a0Allows\u00a0Monitoring of\u00a0Pressure to\u00a0Improve\u00a0Outcomes in\u00a0NYHA Class III Patients) Trial Study Group randomized 550 patients with NYHA class III HF to receive either the CardioMEMS heart sensor or conventional therapy.<\/p>\n<p>After six months, there were 83 HF-related hospitalizations in the treatment group versus 120 in the control group \u2014 a 30% reduction. At 15 months, the reduction in HF-related hospitalizations reached 39%. There were no pressure-sensor failures and 8 patients had a complication related to the device.<\/p>\n<p>The authors concluded that the &#8220;trial represents the first positive, randomized, adequately powered clinical trial of implantable hemodynamic monitoring in patients with moderately symptomatic HF. The addition of information about pulmonary artery pressure to clinical signs and symptoms allows for improved HF management and leads to a reduction in HF-related hospitalizations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736%2811%2960164-5\/fulltext\">accompanying comment<\/a>, Henry\u00a0Krum wrote that &#8220;the CardioMEMS\u00a0device seems to be a simple but ingenious piece of bioengineering.
