{"id":6444,"date":"2011-02-14T14:11:26","date_gmt":"2011-02-14T19:11:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/?p=6444"},"modified":"2011-07-19T17:44:35","modified_gmt":"2011-07-19T21:44:35","slug":"af-guidelines-updated-to-incorporate-dabigatran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/2011\/02\/14\/af-guidelines-updated-to-incorporate-dabigatran\/","title":{"rendered":"AF Guidelines Updated to Incorporate Dabigatran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Less than two months after the publication of the<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/dronedarone-rate-control-and-catheter-ablation-incorporated-in-updated-af-guidelines\/\"> 2010 updated atrial fibrillation (AF) guidelines<\/a>, the AHA, the ACC, and the HRS have released a new focused update incorporating recommendations and a discussion concerning the direct thrombin inhibitor dabigatran, which gains a Class I recommendation:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Class I: Dabigatran is useful as an alternative to warfarin for the prevention of stroke and systemic thromboembolism in patients with paroxysmal to permanent AF and risk factors for stroke or systemic embolization who do not have a prosthetic heart valve or hemodynamically significant valve disease, severe renal failure (creatinine clearance 15 mL\/min), or advanced liver disease (impaired baseline clotting function).
