The paper, by David Conen and colleagues, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/content\/154\/11\/719.abstract\">appears in the <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.annals.org\/content\/154\/11\/719.abstract\">Annals of Internal Medicine<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here are the age-adjusted incidence rates per 1000 person-years of follow-up:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>never smoked: 0.12<\/li>\n<li>former smoker: 0.34<\/li>\n<li>&lt;15 cigarettes per day: 0.95<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">&gt;<\/span>15 cigarettes per day: 1.63<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here are the age-adjusted hazard ratios:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>never smoked: 1.0<\/li>\n<li>former smoker: 2.95 (1.91-4.55)<\/li>\n<li>&lt;15 cigarettes per day: 8.76 (5.05-15.21)<\/li>\n<li>\u2265 15 cigarettes per day: 16.51 (10.66-25.57)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Adjusting for other risk factors did not substantially change the results.
