{"id":8656,"date":"2011-06-09T14:52:26","date_gmt":"2011-06-09T18:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/?p=8656"},"modified":"2011-07-19T17:44:23","modified_gmt":"2011-07-19T21:44:23","slug":"pioglitazone-actos-suspended-in-france-over-cancer-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/cardioexchange\/2011\/06\/09\/pioglitazone-actos-suspended-in-france-over-cancer-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"Pioglitazone (Actos) Suspended in France Over Cancer Concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sales of the popular diabetes drug pioglitazone (Actos, Takeda) have been suspended in France after a study carried out by the French health insurance fund (CNAM) found that it may increase the risk of bladder cancer. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afssaps.fr\/Activites\/Surveillance-des-medicaments\/Medicaments-dont-l-AMM-a-ete-recemment-suspendue-ou-dont-la-commercialisation-a-ete-arretee-ou-est-en-cours-d-arret\/Medicaments-dont-l-AMM-a-ete-recemment-suspendue-ou-dont-la-commercialisation-a-ete-arretee-ou-est-en-cours-d-arret\/ACTOS-R-COMPETACT-R\">The French regulatory agency (AFSSAPS) said <\/a>that new prescriptions for drugs containing pioglitazone may no longer be written, but that people who are already taking the drug may continue to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Pioglitazone is the subject of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/Drugs\/DrugSafety\/ucm226214.htm\">an ongoing FDA safety review<\/a> for a potential increased risk of bladder cancer after 2 years of exposure. The FDA has not commented on the French action.\u00a0The European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced in March that it was also conducting a safety review of pioglitazone. The EMA today issued <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ema.europa.eu\/ema\/index.jsp?curl=pages\/news_and_events\/news\/2011\/06\/news_detail_001275.jsp&amp;murl=menus\/news_and_events\/news_and_events.jsp&amp;mid=WC0b01ac058004d5c1\">a statement<\/a> about the French suspension and said that pioglitazone will be discussed at the next Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) meeting\u00a0on June 20-23, 2011, and that it will &#8220;recommend appropriate actions as necessary&#8221; at that time.
