It\u2019s either just about shift change and people are rushing into their jobs for the day (or night), or the hospital is bursting at its <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2499 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"cup of latte\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306-1014x1024.jpg 1014w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306-25x25.jpg 25w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306-144x144.jpg 144w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306-32x32.jpg 32w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306-64x64.jpg 64w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306-96x96.jpg 96w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/IMG_4942-e1536026231306-128x128.jpg 128w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>seams and everyone is go-go-go.\u00a0Is someone ordering an Americano?\u00a0He or she must know that the dregs of the day\u2019s coffee are all that\u2019s left and is instead gambling that a freshly pulled espresso shot is a safer bet.\u00a0A latte?\u00a0That lucky person might have a little time to spare and might even sit down to enjoy his or her drink right there instead of hurrying back to the floor\/clinic\/unit\/OR.\u00a0How about the counter with the milks and sugars \u2014 are all the sugar or sweetener packets gone?\u00a0Must be insanely busy. Milk or \u2014 gasp \u2014 half-and-half all gone?\u00a0The shop\u2019s been busy, so much so that they\u2019ve run out of the dairy product within the allowed 2-hour\u00a0serving time.\u00a0You see \u2014 if you happen to have time to take note of these things \u2014\u00a0there\u2019s a lot to be observed.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/coffee-pots.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2510 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/coffee-pots-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"coffee pots\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/coffee-pots-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/general-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/09\/coffee-pots.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>How much coffee does a residency program go through during a conference?\u00a0Are the residents burning the candle at both ends while on service?\u00a0 If so, we\u2019ll go through a pot of coffee in 5 minutes as they sit down for afternoon conference.\u00a0 [My co-chiefs and I have carried on the tradition of providing coffee with conference \u2014 there is no excuse for sleeping if you have access to caffeine.]\u00a0 Things have been a little bit calmer on the floors and they have a few minutes to decompress?\u00a0We might need to fire up another pot of coffee after conference, just to give everyone a few more minutes to sit together and chat.\u00a0How fast are we going through the half-and-half or almond creamer?\u00a0Are all of the caffeine lovers on service at the same time, or has it been an unusually busy time and everyone\u2019s reaching for a cup during conference?\u00a0Or perhaps there are days when our \u201cproprietary blend\u201d wasn\u2019t that popular, and most of the coffee went down the drain. (I will never again buy French vanilla coffee.
