A double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>comparing tenofovir gel (<em>n<\/em>\u00a0= 445) with placebo gel (<em>n<\/em>\u00a0= 444)<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>in sexually active, HIV-uninfected 18- to 40-year-old women<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>in urban and rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa &#8230; Tenofovir<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>gel reduced HIV acquisition by an estimated 39% overall and<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>by 54% in women with high gel adherence. No increase in the<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>overall adverse event rates was observed.
