{"id":1060,"date":"2010-08-18T14:29:48","date_gmt":"2010-08-18T18:29:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/?p=1060"},"modified":"2015-06-04T15:24:47","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T19:24:47","slug":"wednesday-wolbachias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/wednesday-wolbachias\/2010\/08\/18\/","title":{"rendered":"Wednesday Wolbachias"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1061\" title=\"gehrig luckiest man\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2010\/08\/gehrig-luckiest-man1.jpg\" alt=\"gehrig luckiest man\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" \/>Some scattered HIV\/ID issues as the days remain warm but are (sadly) growing shorter:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here&#8217;s another one of these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-10983227\" target=\"_blank\">legal cases<\/a> in which a person with HIV is charged with a crime for not warning partners about being HIV positive.\u00a0 Interesting twists this time:\u00a0 it&#8217;s a woman, and it&#8217;s in Germany.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kxxv.com\/global\/story.asp?s=12977817\" target=\"_blank\">This other one in Texas<\/a> is more typical.\u00a0 Read Abbie Zuger&#8217;s take on all this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/20\/health\/20essa.html?_r=1&amp;scp=1&amp;sq=zuger&amp;st=cse\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00a0from a case in Florida, and my (slightly different) view <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/index.php\/should-transmission-of-hiv-be-a-crime\/2010\/04\/22\/\" target=\"_blank\">here.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Are rates of MRSA <em>really<\/em> down?\u00a0 Amazingly, astoundingly, shockingly &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/jama.ama-assn.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/304\/6\/641\" target=\"_blank\">yes<\/a>, at least in health care settings.\u00a0 Leading theories for this decline are better prevention efforts for blood stream infections in general and MRSA in particular.<\/li>\n<li>From what I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/laninf\/article\/PIIS1473-3099(10)70143-2\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\">read about the new &#8220;superbug&#8221; (<em>bla<\/em>NDM-1)<\/a>, it seems to be &#8220;just&#8221; another carbapenemase-producing gram negative &#8230; right?\u00a0 Just a hunch, but if it weren&#8217;t for this choice part\u00a0&#8212; <em>&#8220;Several of the UK source patients had undergone elective, including cosmetic, surgery while visiting India or Pakistan&#8221;<\/em> &#8212; this might not have made such a splash in the news.<\/li>\n<li>One person in New England is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpri.com\/dpp\/news\/local_news\/wpri-providence-newport-county-man-in-critical-condition-with-first-case-of-eee-in-rhode-island-this-summer\" target=\"_blank\">sick with Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE)<\/a>, likely contracted before the mosquito spraying began up here.\u00a0 Which reminds me &#8211;could there be any advice <em>less<\/em> heeded than when health departments tell people\u00a0to wear &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/?pageID=eohhs2pressrelease&amp;L=4&amp;L0=Home&amp;L1=Government&amp;L2=Departments+and+Divisions&amp;L3=Department+of+Public+Health&amp;sid=Eeohhs2&amp;b=pressrelease&amp;f=100815_first_eee_case&amp;csid=Eeohhs2\" target=\"_blank\">long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors<\/a>&#8221; in the summer?\u00a0 Perhaps the one to &#8220;avoid outdoor activity at dusk&#8221; is a close second.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Just when you thought the JetBlue flight attendant story could not get more bizarre &#8212;\u00a0 well <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.poz.com\/oriol\/archives\/2010\/08\/hiv_and_the_jetblue.html\" target=\"_blank\">yes it could<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Not an ID-related factoid, but this information about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/18\/sports\/18gehrig.html?src=me&amp;ref=homepage\" target=\"_blank\">head trauma mimicking ALS<\/a> is incredibly interesting.\u00a0 Confession:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a4msaZTJrTA\" target=\"_blank\">Gehrig&#8217;s\u00a0&#8220;Luckiest Man&#8221;
