{"id":1228,"date":"2010-12-01T16:37:09","date_gmt":"2010-12-01T21:37:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/?p=1228"},"modified":"2015-06-04T15:24:21","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T19:24:21","slug":"world-aids-day-see-you-in-kuala-lumpur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/world-aids-day-see-you-in-kuala-lumpur\/2010\/12\/01\/","title":{"rendered":"World AIDS Day: See You in Kuala Lumpur"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1229\" title=\"red ribbon\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2010\/12\/red-ribbon1.png\" alt=\"red ribbon\" width=\"241\" height=\"359\" \/>A few random thoughts on this 2010 World AIDS Day.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Now you can mark your calendars for the next <em>three<\/em> International AIDS Society\/World AIDS Meetings: \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;sqi=2&amp;ved=0CBMQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ias2011.org%2F&amp;ei=G5n2TNz9HY28sAPGtbWmCw&amp;usg=AFQjCNFZLP0vOwXudkGReBNzEdWQSxFHBQ&amp;sig2=Mb97fRSmgthdQU7RKFDAtw\" target=\"_blank\">2011 in Rome<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;sqi=2&amp;ved=0CBYQFjAA&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aids2012.org%2F&amp;ei=TZn2TI-VIsGB8gbfqdmhBw&amp;usg=AFQjCNEDv_0NrDfPKNS_nm2QQ5rOUZgAhA&amp;sig2=aNeNVDdQiGVqc6nOaJiZXw\" target=\"_blank\">2012 in\u00a0Washington, DC<\/a> &#8212; and now,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/viewer?url=http:\/\/www.iasociety.org\/Web\/WebContent\/File\/Malaysia_as_1st_Asian_host_of_worlds_largest_open_scientific_conference_on_HIV_AIDS.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2013 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia<\/a>. \u00a0And what do all 3 of these cities have in common? \u00a0Extreme summer heat!\u00a0\u00a0(For Kuala Lumpur, it&#8217;s actually just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.com\/outlook\/events\/weddings\/wxclimatology\/monthly\/graph\/MYXX0008\" target=\"_blank\">extreme heat<\/a>, not just in the summer.) \u00a0Probably some sort of weird compensation for several frigid February&#8217;s at CROI.<\/li>\n<li>Not mentioned in my discussion of the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/index.php\/once-daily-raltegravir-not-non-inferior-to-twice-daily\/2010\/11\/29\/\" target=\"_blank\">once- versus twice-daily raltegravir study<\/a> was the study name &#8212; which was QDMRK. \u00a0Yes, the sponsors (can you guess who they were?) continued the self-referential theme that started with BENCHMRK, followed by STARTMRK and then SWITCHMRK. \u00a0Could a study of coffee be planned, &#8220;PERCMRK&#8221;? Of the Thanksgiving meal, &#8220;TURKMRK?&#8221; Or of how to avoid a task, called &#8220;SHIRKWORKMRK?&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>On the topic of study names, this really has been a banner period for acronyms. \u00a0Here&#8217;s a partial list <em>just from this year<\/em>: \u00a0CAPRISA, CAMELIA, PROGRESS, SPARTAN, ECHO, THRIVE, SHIELD, VERXVE, VIKING, SPRING, SPIRAL, ODIS, ROCKET, SENSE, METABOLIK, ATLAS, ATLIS (yes, there&#8217;s both an ATLAS and an ATLIS). Trust me, I live and breathe this stuff daily, and still have trouble keeping all of them straight.<\/li>\n<li>Some good news on the HIV testing front <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/mm59e1130a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\">in this report from MMWR<\/a>:\u00a0\u00a0Compared with 2001, today more people are aware of their HIV status, and &#8220;late&#8221; diagnoses are declining. \u00a0However, it&#8217;s still striking that even though we&#8217;ve had effective HIV treatment for nearly 15 years, around one-third of people are still diagnosed with HIV when they&#8217;ve already had complications from AIDS or have severe immunodeficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anyway &#8212; what are your thoughts on these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/images?q=red+ribbons+aids&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;source=og&amp;sa=N&amp;hl=en&amp;tab=wi&amp;biw=1268&amp;bih=621\" target=\"_blank\">red ribbons<\/a>? \u00a0Powerful awareness tool, helpful in keeping HIV on the radar screen? \u00a0Or over-commercialized, politically-correct, past-its-prime symbol? \u00a0You decide &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A few random thoughts on this 2010 World AIDS Day.
