{"id":1521,"date":"2011-04-11T06:36:56","date_gmt":"2011-04-11T10:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/?p=1521"},"modified":"2011-04-11T06:36:56","modified_gmt":"2011-04-11T10:36:56","slug":"organ-transplants-from-hiv-infected-donors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/organ-transplants-from-hiv-infected-donors\/2011\/04\/11\/","title":{"rendered":"Organ Transplants from HIV-Infected Donors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the heels of last month&#8217;s report of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/mm6010a1.htm\" target=\"_blank\">HIV transmission from an organ donor<\/a> &#8212; covered <a href=\"http:\/\/infectious-diseases.jwatch.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/2011\/330\/4\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> in <em>Journal Watch<\/em> &#8212; comes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/04\/11\/us\/11hiv.html?_r=1&amp;hp\" target=\"_blank\">this remarkable article<\/a> in the <em>New York Times<\/em> about lifting the ban on organ donation from donors known to be HIV positive.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, the first group of patients slated to receive these HIV positive organs would have HIV themselves.<\/p>\n<p>But the article goes further:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But some experts, including Dr. Segev and Dr. Kuehnert, say they can  foresee such transplants even for H.I.V.-negative patients because  contracting H.I.V. would be preferable to kidney or liver failure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to minimize living with H.I.V, but it is a medically  treatable disease now,\u201d said Charlie Alexander, president of the United  Network for Organ Sharing, which manages the country\u2019s organ transplant  system. \u201cIn certain cases, I think it would be medically appropriate.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If ever there were proof that HIV is now a highly-treatable condition, I&#8217;d say this could be Exhibit One.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the heels of last month&#8217;s report of HIV transmission from an organ donor &#8212; covered here in Journal Watch &#8212; comes this remarkable article in the New York Times about lifting the ban on organ donation from donors known to be HIV positive.
