Three key papers on timing of ART in patients with TB have just been published<\/a> in the New England Journal of Medicine<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Carlos Del Rio has done a bang-up job\u00a0summarizing them<\/a> in Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care.<\/em><\/p>\n

And if you’re wondering how we got our title for Carlos’ piece,\u00a0here’s an e-mail between our\u00a0Executive Editor to me a few weeks ago:<\/p>\n

Hi Paul-
\nLater this month, NEJM will be publishing three articles on the timing of ART initiation relative to\u00a0TB\u00a0treatment. I assume we should cover these?

To which I responded:<\/p>\n

Yep. \u00a0And they all can be summarized as follows: “TB + low CD4 = start ART sooner rather than later”.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Yes, there are lots<\/em> more data from these studies than this simple equation, but my response was a reminder that, despite being a thrice-certified ID specialist, I tend to be more of a lumper rather than a splitter — which makes me feel somewhat deficient in our field.<\/p>\n

Oh well.<\/p>\n

Of course even the less detail-obsessed\u00a0ID docs like me probably score pretty high on the OCD-meter<\/a>, so I can take some comfort in that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
