{"id":2263,"date":"2011-12-24T07:01:39","date_gmt":"2011-12-24T12:01:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/?p=2263"},"modified":"2015-06-04T15:15:16","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T19:15:16","slug":"making-a-list-and-checking-it-twice-then-making-sure-052-is-on-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/making-a-list-and-checking-it-twice-then-making-sure-052-is-on-it\/2011\/12\/24\/","title":{"rendered":"Making a List and Checking it Twice, Then Making Sure 052 is On It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/12\/9050839_blog1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2265\" title=\"checklist\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2011\/12\/9050839_blog1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"126\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>How big a news story was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1105243\" target=\"_blank\">HPTN 052,<\/a> which demonstrated that HIV treatment reduced transmission by <em>at least<\/em> 96%?<\/p>\n<p>(I like to emphasize that &#8220;at least&#8221; bit, since it&#8217;s likely that none of the study subjects with undetectable HIV RNA levels transmitted to their partners &#8212; the one case that did transmit did so before virologic suppression.)<\/p>\n<p>Well, sources as disparate as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/site\/special\/btoy2011\/\" target=\"_blank\">Science<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/article\/0,28804,2101344_2100769_2100760,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Time<\/a><\/em> magazine both chose 052 for their &#8220;Top 10&#8221; in this year&#8217;s review of scientific breakthroughs. <em>Science<\/em> even put 052 as #1, something that you can bet we&#8217;ll have in common with this august periodical when <em>Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care<\/em> publishes its own &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/aids-clinical-care.jwatch.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/2011\/1230\/1\">Top Stories<\/a>&#8221; next week.<\/p>\n<p>But a Bronx Cheer out to <em>Scientific American<\/em>, which not only excluded 052, but then mentioned the following as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article.cfm?id=top-10-science-stories-2011&amp;offset=7\" target=\"_blank\">a runner up<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;the report of a new target against HIV, in which a doorway to infection (the so-called CCR5-receptor on immune cells) is blocked.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>CCR5 blockade a &#8220;new target&#8221;? That <a href=\"http:\/\/aids-clinical-care.jwatch.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/2002\/401\/1\" target=\"_blank\">news is <em>so<\/em> 2002.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How big a news story was HPTN 052, which demonstrated that HIV treatment reduced transmission by at least 96%?
