They gave it to me, I waited 25 minutes, and then had my teeth cleaned.\u00a0Was that necessary?<br \/>\nMom<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Sigh.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Where do I begin? I considered responding with a terse, &#8220;Nope&#8221; &#8212; but what&#8217;s the fun in that? Plus, even though she never went to medical school, she seems to get medical concepts better than most MDs.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s broadly misconceived by dentists and orthopedists alike that the risk of antibiotics is lower than the risk of &#8220;seeding&#8221; an artificial joint or plate by the dental work.<br \/>\nClearly <em>wrong<\/em>.<br \/>\nBut that doesn&#8217;t stop them. And it&#8217;s because surgeons are much more worried about passive errors (not doing something) than they are about harming someone with an active error (medication side effect).<br \/>\nThey&#8217;re surgeons, after all. \u00a0Maddening.<br \/>\nPaul<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>For her added reading pleasure, I sent her <a href=\"http:\/\/cid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/50\/1\/8.short\" target=\"_blank\">this reference,<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/50\/1\/17.full?sid=cb32b980-0adf-4643-a3bb-89a2b9dc1c49\" target=\"_blank\">this editorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m <em>sure<\/em> she&#8217;s read every word.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have a regular, highly efficient email correspondence with my mother &#8212; who never really liked talking on the phone to begin with (neither do I), so email is perfect for us.
