{"id":2761,"date":"2012-05-30T18:02:47","date_gmt":"2012-05-30T22:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/?p=2761"},"modified":"2015-06-04T15:14:38","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T19:14:38","slug":"little-fluffy-baby-chicks-spread-deadly-intestinal-infection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/little-fluffy-baby-chicks-spread-deadly-intestinal-infection\/2012\/05\/30\/","title":{"rendered":"Little Fluffy Baby Chicks Spread Deadly Intestinal Infection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/05\/12203147_blog1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2762\" title=\"chick\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/05\/12203147_blog1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Sorry for the headline, but that was the first thing I thought of when reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1111818\" target=\"_blank\">this paper just published in the <em>New England Journal of Medicine:<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1111818\" target=\"_blank\"><em> <\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">In this report, we describe a prolonged and ongoing multistate outbreak of human salmonella infections primarily affecting young children and linked to contact with live young poultry from a single mail-order hatchery&#8230;\u00a0Because only\u00a0a portion of salmonella infections are laboratory confirmed,\u00a0it is likely that thousands of additional\u00a0unreported infections occurred in association\u00a0with this outbreak.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To be fair, no one actually died from this outbreak (though 36 patients were hospitalized, most of them 5 years old or younger).<\/p>\n<p>Regardless &#8212; it&#8217;s hard to imagine baby chicks as vectors for <em>anything<\/em>, let alone something as unsanitary as salmonella. They&#8217;re so cute!<\/p>\n<p>But when you think about it for even a few seconds, why should they be any cleaner than grown-up chickens &#8212; which are decidedly <em>not <\/em>clean.<\/p>\n<p>So the next time you send the kids out to the backyard flock to check for fresh eggs, and they might stop on the way to play with the chicks, pay attention to these wise folks from the CDC, who warn:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Consumers wishing to reduce their risk of illness\u00a0should practice meticulous hand hygiene\u00a0and encourage this behavior in children.
