{"id":312,"date":"2009-03-20T08:50:23","date_gmt":"2009-03-20T13:50:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/?p=312"},"modified":"2015-06-04T15:31:08","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T19:31:08","slug":"hair-today-gone-tomorrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/hair-today-gone-tomorrow\/2009\/03\/20\/","title":{"rendered":"Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2009\/03\/hair1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-313\" title=\"hair\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2009\/03\/hair1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"106\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Since providers &#8212; especially doctors &#8212; are notoriously poor at predicting medication adherence, here&#8217;s some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19165084?ordinalpos=1&amp;itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum\" target=\"_blank\">good news<\/a>: In a paper from the Women&#8217;s Interagency Health Study, protease inhibitor levels in <em>hair samples <\/em>were the strongest independent predictor of virologic success &#8212; better than self-reported adherence, age, race, baseline viral load and CD4 cell count, and prior experience with protease inhibitors.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s not all:\u00a0 Dr. Monica Gandhi (the lead investigator) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/english\/Africa\/2009-03-13-voa29.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">describes the technique<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"body\">&#8220;We collect a small sample of hair from the back of their head and by small I mean 10 to 15 strands. So we collect after about a month of therapy a small thatch of hair from the back of your head and then grind it up and measure the anti-retroviral in that hair. And that gives us an idea after you start a new regimen whether you have enough in your system,&#8221; she says.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And in case you were wondering (<em>were <\/em>you?):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"body\">&#8220;One thing that people ask is can we use pubic hair for these measurements. And we don&#8217;t think that those are going to be useful because hair in those areas grow to a certain length and then they stop, which is great for anyone who has this hair.
