{"id":4450,"date":"2013-08-06T10:16:01","date_gmt":"2013-08-06T14:16:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/?p=4450"},"modified":"2015-05-18T10:56:54","modified_gmt":"2015-05-18T14:56:54","slug":"nelson-cruz-and-yet-another-id-baseball-link","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/nelson-cruz-and-yet-another-id-baseball-link\/2013\/08\/06\/","title":{"rendered":"Nelson Cruz and Yet Another ID-Baseball Link"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Texas slugger Nelson Cruz is one of the Biogenesis gang just suspended from baseball for use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).<\/p>\n<p>For those who care about these things, he&#8217;s also probably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseballnation.com\/2013\/8\/5\/4591110\/biogenesis-suspensions-alex-rodriguez-jhonny-peralta-nelson-cruz-2013-season\" target=\"_blank\">the most important player<\/a> from the banned list, since he&#8217;s 1) very good and 2) on a team in contention for a playoff spot.<\/p>\n<p>For those who don&#8217;t care about baseball, we have <a href=\"http:\/\/mlb.mlb.com\/news\/article.jsp?ymd=20130805&amp;content_id=55963884&amp;vkey=news_tex&amp;c_id=tex\" target=\"_blank\">this from Cruz himself<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>From November 2011 to January 2012, I was <strong>seriously ill with a gastrointestinal infection, helicobacter pylori<\/strong>, which went undiagnosed for over a month. By the time I was properly diagnosed and treated, I had lost 40 pounds. Just weeks before I was to report to Spring Training in 2012, I was unsure whether I would be physically able to play.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now with the caveat that we <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/index.php\/id-doctors-are-clueless-about-treating-helicobacter\/2012\/10\/15\/\" target=\"_blank\">ID doctors are woefully uneducated about all things helicobacter<\/a>, it&#8217;s pretty clear that guidelines for treatment of\u00a0<em>H pylori\u00a0<\/em>don&#8217;t include testosterone, growth hormone, and whatever other garbage Biogenesis was peddling.<\/p>\n<p>But could they make you a better right fielder?<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PZVCrKcOl78\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Texas slugger Nelson Cruz is one of the Biogenesis gang just suspended from baseball for use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).
