{"id":554,"date":"2009-10-05T20:29:58","date_gmt":"2009-10-06T01:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/?p=554"},"modified":"2015-06-04T15:30:02","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T19:30:02","slug":"no-baseball-tonight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/no-baseball-tonight\/2009\/10\/05\/","title":{"rendered":"No Baseball Tonight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2009\/10\/no-baseball1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-556\" title=\"no-baseball\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2009\/10\/no-baseball-284x3001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Are you writing another funny blog post because there&#8217;s no baseball?&#8221; asks my son J.<\/p>\n<p>As &#8220;funny&#8221; is very much in the eye of the beholder, that remains to be seen.\u00a0 But here are a few things on my mind the last few days:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No data supporting <a href=\"http:\/\/jama.ama-assn.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/2009.1466v1\" target=\"_blank\">N95 over surgical masks for flu<\/a>.\u00a0 One huge <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/index.php\/2009\/09\/04\/for-suspected-h1n1-get-out-the-n95-masks\/\" target=\"_blank\">logistical issue<\/a> dodged &#8212; at least for now.\u00a0 But <em>Consumer Reports<\/em>, that darling of objective reporting, seems to think <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/health\/healthy-living\/health-safety\/swine-flu-masks\/overview\/swine-flu-masks-ov.htm\" target=\"_blank\">they&#8217;re just great.<\/a> Since &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minimax\" target=\"_blank\">minimax<\/a>&#8221; is the operative strategy for infection control, look for this controversy to go on for a bit.<\/li>\n<li>Speaking of flu, I&#8217;ve been hearing for weeks (from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hydeparkpedi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">certain someone<\/a>) how chaotic this H1N1 vaccine situation will be in pediatric practices.\u00a0 And here&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/06\/nyregion\/06vaccine.html?hp\" target=\"_blank\">proof<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/04\/health\/04meat.html?em\" target=\"_blank\">LONG (wow) piece<\/a> on <em>E. coli<\/em> O157:H7.\u00a0 Not unreasonable, given the potential severity of the illness and the tortuous route hamburgers take en route to our kitchens.\u00a0 (Yuck.)\u00a0 Did I mention before that this is one of the few ID issues that my wife and I take a hard line on?\u00a0 Make those burgers well-done, thank you.<\/li>\n<li>Hey, did you catch the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mass.gov\/legis\/hearings\/10-06-2009_DAILY_HEARING_LIST.htm\" target=\"_blank\">10AM agenda<\/a> in tomorrow&#8217;s General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts?\u00a0 Can&#8217;t miss that.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, did a throat infection <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/nation\/la-sci-dinosaur-parasite30-2009sep30,0,4200146.story\" target=\"_blank\">bring down the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex?<\/a> Perhaps if the dinosaur doc sent a &#8220;hold&#8221; tube to the lab, they can make the diagnosis retrospectively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Good luck Tigers\/Twins fans!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Are you writing another funny blog post because there&#8217;s no baseball?&#8221; asks my son J.
