Question: Will it take a hospitalization &#8212; or even worse, a death &#8212; of an American child with\u00a0measles to stop this ridiculousness?<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/states-work-to-strike-deals-for-hep-c-drug-discounts-1422492687\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>This piece in the Wall Street Journal<\/strong><\/a> describes the negotiations going on behind the scenes between pharmaceutical companies and payers regarding HCV therapy. I&#8217;m sure something like this has happened before in non-ID fields (Oncology or Rheumatology would be my best bet), but I have never experienced anything like this as an ID doctor &#8212; meaning, both\u00a0the clinician and the patient seem to be\u00a0completely left out of the discussion. Hello? Can anyone hear us?<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ofid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/2\/1\/ofv004.full\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Can a fecal microbiota transplant from an overweight donor\u00a0lead to obesity in the recipient?<\/strong><\/a> That&#8217;s the implication in a case report\u00a0over in <em>Open Forum infectious Diseases<\/em>. While the case does not prove causality (other factors could have contributed to the weight gain), the plausibility of the FMT leading to obesity is\u00a0at the very least suggested in the clinical course and supported by animal data where indeed the microbiome plays a major role in metabolism. Don&#8217;t miss <a href=\"http:\/\/ofid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/2\/1\/ofv005.full\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>this excellent editoria<\/strong>l<\/a> from real experts in the field.<\/li>\n<li>More evidence that <a href=\"http:\/\/cid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/60\/4\/505.full\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>booster vaccines for hepatitis B are probably not needed,<\/strong><\/a> at least according to a study<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in health care workers. It&#8217;s that &#8220;long-lasting amnestic response&#8221; &#8212; meaning even when antibodies decline, exposure to the antigen is rapid and protective. The hepatitis B vaccine was an extraordinary and unheralded major advance in\u00a0safety for healthcare workers.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/pb\/assets\/raw\/journals\/research\/cell-systems\/do-not-delete\/CELS1_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">There are lots and lots of strange bacteria in the NYC subway,<\/a><\/strong> says this fascinating, much-publicized and (let&#8217;s face it) extremely unsurprising report published in <em>Cell.<\/em>\u00a0Best part:\u00a0&#8220;Almost half of all DNA present on the subway\u2019s surfaces\u00a0matches no known organism.&#8221;\u00a0If I might make a personal comment: when my family\u00a0moved to New York City in the 1970s,\u00a0there were no doubt <em>even\u00a0more bizarre<\/em> microbes living down there. Anyone have a spare autoclave?<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/fda-approves-bristol-myers-hiv-drug-224759959--finance.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The coformulations of atazanavir\/cobicistat and darunavir\/cobicistat are now available.<\/strong><\/a> <em>Definitely<\/em> more convenient to have them together (avoiding selective skipping of ritonavir), and if they&#8217;re price-equivalent to the separate dosing of the drugs, then they eventually will be widely adopted. Otherwise &#8212; and especially with the approval of generic ritonavir &#8212; they could\u00a0face a tricky pharmacoeconomic challenge. Now throw in 300 mg of lamivudine and pull of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24783988\" target=\"_blank\">a GARDEL study<\/a>\u00a0equivalent, now <em>that<\/em>\u00a0could be <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/gardel-two-active-drug-study-not-a-game-changer-but-it-might-be-a-paradigm-shifter\/2013\/10\/25\/\" target=\"_blank\">transformative<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25416751\" target=\"_blank\">Wonderful &#8220;Call to Arms&#8221; about the crisis facing Infectious Diseases<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0by Ron Nahass, who in our field is something of\u00a0a true visionary: He understands\u00a0&#8212; and fortunately can communicate &#8212; the value of ID doctors independent of billing units in a fee-for-service environment. Required reading for the gloomy ID doc (and there are lots of us out there). My favorite line: &#8220;Develop a true value of our intellectual capital.&#8221; In other words, get paid for being smart, not for doing a procedure.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceline.org\/2015\/01\/cold-viruses-thrive-in-cold-noses\/\" target=\"_blank\">Being cold could increase the chances of catching a cold.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>Score one for common wisdom!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the latest storm intensifies up here in Boston, it&#8217;s worth disabusing the world at large of the perception that the whole Northeastern United States has the same weather.
