You&#8217;re sick of hearing Bostonians complain about the winter we just had. But did you know that the weather here didn&#8217;t get reliably warm here until, well, this week?<\/p>\n<p>We all have PTSD. Don&#8217;t talk to us about anything even vaguely white, flakey, and cold. Yes, we&#8217;re afraid of refrigerated coconut.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll stop whining now.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/09\/world\/asia\/mers-viruss-path-one-man-many-south-korean-hospitals.html?ref=health&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The spread of MERS in Korea is facilitated by severe overcrowding in hospitals<\/strong>.<\/a> Who knew that getting a hospital room in Seoul was like trying to get a reservation at a top restaurant in New York City.<\/li>\n<li>Remarkable\u00a0paper on\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jid.oxfordjournals.org\/content\/early\/2015\/05\/27\/infdis.jiv235.full\" target=\"_blank\">survival after AIDS-related opportunistic infections in San Francisco since the beginning of the epidemic<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0 Vast improvement over time, of course, but not uniformly among all OIs &#8212; outcomes for lymphoma (especially CNS) and PML are still dismal.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1411162\" target=\"_blank\">A short-course of antibiotics (4 days) for abdominal infections seems to be just fine<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0The challenge, of course, is not with straightforward cases &#8212; it&#8217;s the ones where &#8220;source control&#8221; can&#8217;t be verified. Or, to quote the fine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/ref\/10.1056\/NEJMe1503936#t=article\" target=\"_blank\">accompanying editorial<\/a>, &#8220;Early in the 21st century, it seems likely that source control remains a considerable problem in treating abdominal sepsis.&#8221; Indeed. So though it&#8217;s an important study, I \u00a0don&#8217;t think we&#8217;re quite ready to remove this from the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/tag\/unanswerable-questions-in-infectious-diseases\/\" target=\"_blank\">unanswerable questions list<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Like something out of science fiction,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/content\/348\/6239\/aaa0698\" target=\"_blank\">this test can tell you every virus you&#8217;ve ever been exposed to<\/a><\/strong>. Based on <a href=\"http:\/\/hydeparkpedi.com\/staff\/carolyn-sax\/\" target=\"_blank\">personal domestic experience<\/a>, I would bet pediatricians break all kinds of records for positivity on this one. And how long before you can get this test done at your local CVS? Further discussion <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/05\/health\/single-blood-test-for-all-virus-exposures.html?ref=health&amp;_r=1\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00a0in the <em>New York Times<\/em>, in case <em>Science<\/em> isn&#8217;t your cup of tea.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/tg2015\/toc.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines<\/a><\/strong> have been updated, a heroic effort that will be cited and referred to many, many times. It&#8217;s a vast document, so use the above CDC link (which has a Table of Contents) rather than the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/rr6403a1.htm?s_cid=rr6403a1_x\" target=\"_blank\">MMWR<\/a>\u00a0one, which doesn&#8217;t. Apps coming soon per lead author Kim Workowski.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMms1502497\" target=\"_blank\">Provocative\u00a0piece on the complex issue of academic-industry relationships<\/a><\/strong>, which raises the distinct possibility that anti-industry sentiment\u00a0might have gone too far in medical research and publishing &#8212; a view echoed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMe1503623\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> by the Editor-in-Chief of the <em>NEJM.<\/em>\u00a0Getting this issue reviewed from a\u00a0different perspective is most welcome, as I can&#8217;t imagine how we could have made HIV treatable without this collaboration. Not surprisingly, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2957\" target=\"_blank\">these views have engendered some controversy<\/a><\/strong>, including\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/350\/bmj.h2942\" target=\"_blank\">from <em>former<\/em> editors<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Related topic &#8212; here&#8217;s a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/news.sciencemag.org\/people-events\/2015\/05\/king-pills\" target=\"_blank\">fascinating profile of nucleoside-nucleotide guru Raymond Schinazi<\/a><\/strong>, the man responsible (to at least some degree) for several groundbreaking HIV and HCV therapeutics. This is not your typical PhD academic scientist &#8212; how many have earnings that rival hedge fund managers, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/gallery\/angelina-jolie-robert-downey-jr-625755\/11-george-clooney\" target=\"_blank\">George Clooney<\/a><\/strong>, or <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rodrial01.shtml#contracts\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Rodriguez<\/a><\/strong>? And who is more deserving?<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/han\/han00379.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Shigella with resistance to azithromycin and quinolones<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/narms\/reports\/annual-human-isolates-report-2013.html\" target=\"_blank\">widespread resistance of salmonella to quinolones<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0The news on these enteric bugs keeps getting worse.
