This time of year, in Boston, it feels\u00a0like early evening, but the clock says\u00a0it&#8217;s only a bit after 4pm. I log onto our electronic health record\u00a0to check for lab results and patient messages, and get\u00a0this:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/message-of-the-day.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7866 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/message-of-the-day-300x135.jpg\" alt=\"message of the day\" width=\"300\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/message-of-the-day-300x135.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2015\/11\/message-of-the-day.jpg 598w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There it is, the &#8220;Message of the Day&#8221;, complete with the <em>this-is-important<\/em> exclamation point, but the message box is empty, saying nothing. Must be some sort of programming glitch, a slip-up buried in the millions lines of code and ones and zeros that are supposed to represent our patients.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never seen this particular error before. What does\u00a0it mean &#8212; what is\u00a0the EHR trying to tell us, but can&#8217;t\u00a0find the words?\u00a0Should I report it? If so, the question is\u00a0to whom &#8212; but does it even matter? The easier path is\u00a0to just click the OK box and move on.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after dealing with this minor inconvenience, I hear\u00a0about the events in Paris &#8212; over a hundred dead from carefully coordinated terrorist attacks, grim images coming forward of bloodied bodies and a city now frozen in fear.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, there is\u00a0no OK box to click for this tragedy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/14\/at-metropolitan-opera-support-for-paris-sounds-out-with-singing-of-frances-national-anthem\/?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">Words alone<\/a> are insufficient to describe our support for the people of France.<\/p>\n<p>[youtube http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=l6vGq_rHAmE&amp;w=560&amp;h=315]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friday, November 13, 2015, late afternoon.
