{"id":8242,"date":"2016-11-25T19:01:17","date_gmt":"2016-11-26T00:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/?p=8242"},"modified":"2018-11-04T13:29:20","modified_gmt":"2018-11-04T18:29:20","slug":"id-cartoon-caption-contest-2-winner-new-contest-end-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/id-cartoon-caption-contest-2-winner-new-contest-end-summer\/2016\/11\/25\/","title":{"rendered":"ID Cartoon Caption Contest #2 Winner \u2014 and a New Contest for the Holidays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every so often, one of my regular readers (which must number at least a dozen\u00a0at this point, including my extended family, dog, and cat)\u00a0asks me where I come up with ideas.<\/p>\n<p>The answer, of course, is that there are infinite sources of inspiration in the field of Infectious Diseases &#8212;\u00a0the difficulty is choosing what fascinating topic will be the target of this week&#8217;s cogent and definitive analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Or, I can just steal something, which is what I&#8217;ve unabashedly done with the Cartoon Contest, modeled after the <a href=\"http:\/\/contest.newyorker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more established version from <em>The New Yorker.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/morgans-vote-favorite-caption\/2016\/09\/11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">winner of the summertime contest<\/a>, an outdoor scene that might bring back fond memories of warm\u00a0breezes, long days at the beach, and dining\u00a0<em>al fresco:<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8164\" style=\"width: 495px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/08\/BurgerFireFinalBW.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8164\" class=\"wp-image-8164\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/08\/BurgerFireFinalBW.png\" alt=\"&quot;No thanks, I\u2019m watching my carbon footprint.&quot;\" width=\"485\" height=\"364\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/08\/BurgerFireFinalBW.png 640w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/08\/BurgerFireFinalBW-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8164\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0&#8220;No thanks, I\u2019m watching my carbon footprint.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>We&#8217;ll give Philip <strong>Morgan<\/strong>elli the top prize on this one, though he&#8217;ll need to share the generous honorarium with John Lee, who introduced the whole &#8220;carbon footprint&#8221; theme and might have provided Philip some\u00a0inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>But I confess this contest turned out a bit differently than anticipated. With such an\u00a0ID-oriented crowd, I figured the obviously\u00a0<em>very<\/em> well-done burgers would generate plenty of funny captions about food safety. If you&#8217;re wondering what I mean, take a look at this <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PaulSaxMD\/status\/801768687741050880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most unappetizing food truck:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/11\/salmonella-pitstop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8244\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/11\/salmonella-pitstop.jpg\" alt=\"salmonella-pitstop\" width=\"473\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/11\/salmonella-pitstop.jpg 473w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/11\/salmonella-pitstop-300x187.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Concern about underdone burgers prompted my next door neighbors Ben and Carol to call the well-done hockey pucks favored by ID specialists &#8220;Madoff burgers&#8221;. It&#8217;s in honor of <a href=\"http:\/\/profiles.umassmed.edu\/profiles\/display\/129929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Lawrence Madoff<\/a>, an ID doctor\u00a0who works at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, who\u00a0periodically attends our neighborhood cookouts &#8212; you can guess Larry&#8217;s emphatic answer to the question, &#8220;And how would you like that done?&#8221; Perhaps he\u00a0will be introducing\u00a0his own line of crispy fast food soon.<\/p>\n<p>Yet none of the top three captions chosen by our AHA (Advanced Humor Algorithm) had anything remotely to do with infectious food safety:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>&#8220;No thanks, I\u2019m watching my carbon footprint.&#8221; <\/em>(the now-famous Philip <strong>Morgan<\/strong>elli)<\/li>\n<li><em>&#8220;Sorry, I was using fire in the belly as a figure of speech.&#8221;<\/em> (JRMD)<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;<em>No thanks.
