The people don&#8217;t look real, the activities are\u00a0staged, and everything has an air-brushed, frozen quality that screams, &#8220;This is not a real thing, but we need some copyright-free graphics and this is the best we can do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Strangely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/search?searchterm=group%20having%20fun&amp;sort=popular&amp;safe=true&amp;search_source=base_search_form&amp;language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depersonalized group photos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/search?search_source=base_landing_page&amp;language=en&amp;searchterm=dog+eating+at+table&amp;image_type=all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">animals in human activities,<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/search?searchterm=oops&amp;search_source=base_search_form&amp;language=en&amp;page=1&amp;sort=popular&amp;image_type=illustration&amp;safe=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">computer-created\u00a0illustrations<\/a> just one step up from Clip Art dominate the stock image sites.<\/p>\n<p>Take this one, for example:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/stock-pic-example.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8352\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/stock-pic-example.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"515\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/stock-pic-example.jpg 619w, https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/stock-pic-example-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Who are these people? They&#8217;re\u00a0in a\u00a0boring white room, so why are they so happy? The woman on the far left, where did she get that hat? Is that dog as uncomfortable\u00a0as it looks? The jeans &#8212;\u00a0are they truly worn out like that, or is this a Photoshop acid-wash effect?\u00a0What&#8217;s with the guys and the tongues?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, thanks to the largesse of the the generous publishers of this site &#8212;\u00a0who are far more famous for their signature product, abbreviated <em>N-E-J-M<\/em>, than for this silliness &#8212; I have access to <em>tons<\/em> of stock photos. Literally 69 million, if you believe the banner on my (secret) source.<\/p>\n<p>Now 69 million images is a lot to get through, especially if you have to milk the cow, pick up the kids after school, make dinner, and save that poor little dog from that black-hatted woman&#8217;s evil clutches.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, there&#8217;s also a search box to help narrow down things a bit.<\/p>\n<p>And just for fun, I searched &#8220;Infectious Diseases&#8221;. Here are a\u00a0select few from the 10,737 that popped up with this query.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s lead off with one for the children:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/two-kids-ID.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8353 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/04\/two-kids-ID.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"364\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hmm, what have we here? Two kids (assume they&#8217;re kids) playing outside on grassy lawn, sharing &#8230; &#8220;infectious diseases&#8221; (lower-case). All in the same cartoon word balloon.<\/li>\n<li>Is this a harkening back to the days of Chicken Pox Parties? Imagine the Evite.<\/li>\n<li>Come to think of it, those virions look very influenza-like &#8212; let&#8217;s hope they&#8217;re not H7N9.<\/li>\n<li>Of course the kids are happy because they&#8217;re developing a healthy immune system. The topic shifts to their colleague Matt, whom they spot in the distance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">KARLA: \u00a0Hey, there&#8217;s Matt! Can we hide? He has the nastiest\u00a0cold.<br \/>\nJEFF: \u00a0I know. I have the cubicle next to him, it&#8217;s disgusting. I hear him expelling gunk from his sinuses every five minutes.<br \/>\nCRISTIN: \u00a0Isn&#8217;t there anything we can do?<br \/>\nKARLA: \u00a0Remember when they thought a\u00a0camel had\u00a0MERS in our local zoo? He then sneezes noisily\u00a0into his handkerchief. English, you know.<\/li>\n<li>For bacteria #2 and #3, it&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Streptococcus <\/em>not <em>Staphylococcus<\/em>. C&#8217;mon Roxanne, you knew <em>that.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Tetracoccus&#8221; and &#8220;Sarcina&#8221; as &#8220;<em>Common<\/em> Bacteria Infecting Human (Beings)?&#8221; You might need Dr. Google to help identify these two (I did), as both are exceedingly rare human pathogens.
