{"id":992,"date":"2010-07-01T09:08:28","date_gmt":"2010-07-01T13:08:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/?p=992"},"modified":"2015-06-04T15:24:59","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T19:24:59","slug":"rfa-ai-10-009-hiv-cure-and-berlin-patient-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/index.php\/rfa-ai-10-009-hiv-cure-and-berlin-patient-update\/2010\/07\/01\/","title":{"rendered":"RFA-AI-10-009, HIV Cure, and &#8220;Berlin Patient&#8221; Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-997\" title=\"sunrise\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/hiv-id-observations\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2010\/07\/sunrise1.jpg\" alt=\"sunrise\" width=\"265\" height=\"199\" \/>Interesting <a href=\"http:\/\/grants1.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/rfa-files\/RFA-AI-10-009.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;RFA&#8221;<\/a> (Request for Application, #RFA-AI-10-009) from Bethesda:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institutes of Health (NIH), encourage grant applications from institutions\/organizations to address the problem of HIV-1 persistence in HIV-1-infected persons treated with suppressive antiretroviral drug regimens&#8230; The goal of this initiative is to expand the knowledge base on HIV-1 latency and persistence so that eradication strategies can be designed, developed and evaluated.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, research directed at a cure.\u00a0 If there&#8217;s any doubt about what the ultimate goal of the grant is, the title of the RFA is &#8220;Martin Delaney Collaboratory:\u00a0 Towards an HIV-1 Cure (U19)&#8221;, named in honor of the <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.sfgate.com\/2009-01-25\/bay-area\/17197169_1_mr-delaney-health-hero-project-inform\" target=\"_blank\">influential patient advocate<\/a> who died last year.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve written before about the &#8220;Berlin Patient&#8221;\u00a0 (<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/index.php\/yes-just-a-case-report-but-incredibly-cool\/2008\/11\/10\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nejm.org\/index.php\/maraviroc-rarely-used-for-treatment-naive-patients\/2010\/04\/14\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, for example)\u00a0who, after receiving a bone marrow transplant from a donor homozygous for the delta-32 CCR5 mutation, was able to stop all antivirals without experiencing virologic rebound.\u00a0 The latest on him from the &#8220;cure&#8221; perspective is that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/biomedicine\/25563\/page1\/\" target=\"_blank\">even Bob Siliciano&#8217;s lab can&#8217;t find virus in the guy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As of today, [the Berlin patient] remains healthy, and his HIV levels are undetectable &#8230; Even samples sent to Siliciano&#8217;s lab and other U.S. facilities that have the most sensitive assays have come up empty.
