An ongoing dialogue on HIV/AIDS, infectious diseases,
March 2nd, 2026
Farewell to This Blog — and Hello to NEJM Voices
After 18 years of HIV and ID Observations, this is my final post here.
That’s nearly 1000 posts since March 2008 — commentary on new HIV data, debates about antibiotic duration, EMR rants, cartoon caption contests, conference highlights, pandemic pain and progress, and more than a few peeves about “quick questions.” Along the way we built something I value enormously: a community of readers who care about infectious diseases, good clinical reasoning, and (occasionally) a joke about drug names. Or a ridiculous video.
Blujepa, anyone?

I’ve written before about how grateful I am for your attention and engagement. The good news is that this won’t change — beginning today, March 2nd, you’ll find me in a new home: NEJM Voices. Same writer, new URL.
If you’re signed up for notifications, you’ll continue to receive them automatically.
And finally, after all this time, it’s time to retire the title. HIV and ID Observations always felt strangely temporary, but we could never come up with a mutually agreed upon replacement.
(Sax, Bugs, and Drugs remains available, in case anyone is wondering.)
I’ll be posting the same content you’ve come to expect, with support from NEJM Group, in this new location and format. New platform, same stuff!
I look forward to seeing you over at NEJM Voices — and to whatever comes next. Sign up to be alerted about new posts here.
For those who want more content, often in a longer, non-medical form, I’ve also been writing on my Substack. Hope you’ll sign up for that, too.
And yes, I’m hoping the silly videos will be coming with me.
